Medication clearance for show and race horses

Know where every dose stands before you load the trailer

Your barn already logs who gave what, how much and when. ShowSafe Pro checks those doses against the show's own rulebook: USEF, FEI, HISA, ARCI and more. Every answer cites the document, the page and the line it came from.

Included in every StallWise plan. On its own from $9.99 a month.

The record is the input

No re-typing at the show office. The clearance answer follows from what your barn already recorded.

1

Pick the horse and the show

It uses the horse's weight, every dose logged in StallWise (drug, mg, route, time, who gave it) and the show's rulebook and first class time. No StallWise records yet? Type the doses in.

2

Checked against the source

Each dose is matched to the published row for that drug, route and dose. Then the rulebook's own body-wide rules are applied: one NSAID, injection windows and joint-injection stand-downs.

3

An answer you can check

Clear, Not clear, Unknown or Prohibited, with the earliest time and your vet's margin added. Each answer shows the document, page and quoted line, and links to the governing body's own PDF.

Clear

Past the published time plus your vet's margin, for the dose and route recorded. It never says "safe".

Not clear

Inside a published time or a rulebook window. Shows when the horse comes into line.

Unknown

Not listed, or the route or dose was not studied. Ask your vet; consider an elective test.

Prohibited

Banned by that body. The result tells you to talk to your vet before anything else.

Built for the day before the show

Citation on every answer

Document, version, page and the quoted row, with a link to the governing body's own document. You can check it in seconds.

Dose and weight aware

It works out mg/kg from the horse's weight and matches the published study for that dose and route. If the dose was higher than the one studied, it doesn't stretch the number on a guess: it marks the result "ask your vet".

Your vet sets the margin

A safety margin as a percentage and/or hours, saved with the name of the person who set it and added to every result.

Latest dose before the show

Planning a treatment? Enter the drug and it tells you the latest time it can be given and still be in line for the first class.

Watched every day

Every source document and its governing body's page is re-checked daily. A changed document or a newly posted list alerts us. We re-transcribe it, and every changed value goes back for review.

Saved checks

Save a check and it keeps the inputs, the result, the rule versions used and who set the margin. That is your record if a result is ever questioned.

The governing bodies' own documents

Each value is transcribed from the current published document, with the page and the line it came from. A list announced for a future date applies automatically to shows on or after it.

HISA 48-hour controlled-medication window before a race; NSAID stacking with secondary detection times; 14-day intra-articular stand-down.

Read this before you rely on any result

  • A detection time is not a withdrawal time. Published times come from small studies of healthy horses given one product, at one dose, by one route. Your horse, product, dose, number of doses or route may differ.
  • You are responsible. Under the rules of every governing body listed here, the trainer or person responsible is strictly liable for a positive test, whatever a calculator said.
  • The governing bodies say their own tables are no defence. Their guidance does not guarantee a negative test, and laboratory methods can change without notice.
  • Your veterinarian makes the call. Use ShowSafe Pro to prepare that conversation, have your vet set the safety margin, and consider elective (pre-competition) testing when anything is uncertain.
  • Values are transcribed and reviewed, not invented. Each result shows its review status and a link to the source, so you can check the original.
  • ShowSafe Pro and StallWise are not affiliated with or endorsed by USEF, FEI, HISA, HIWU, ARCI, IFHA, AQHA, APHA, NRHA, NCHA, Equestrian Canada or RMTC. Their names identify the documents we cite.

Questions

Why don't you just give me a withdrawal time?

No governing body publishes one for you, and most say plainly that they won't. What they publish are detection times, from small studies at one dose and route. A withdrawal time is a detection time plus a safety margin that your vet chooses for your horse.

ShowSafe Pro shows the published time for the dose and route you gave, adds the margin your vet set, and flags anything the studies don't cover (a higher dose, a different route, repeated doses, a joint injection) for your vet instead of guessing. Then it tells you exactly where each number came from.

What if my drug isn't listed?

The result is "Unknown", never "Clear". It says so, quotes what that rulebook says about unlisted substances where it says anything, and suggests asking your vet and considering an elective test. The same happens when the route or dose you gave was never studied.

How fast do you update when the rules change?

Every source document, and the governing body's page that lists its documents, is checked every day. When a document changes or a new list is posted, we are alerted and re-transcribe it. Every value that changed goes back to "transcribed" until it has been reviewed again.

Lists published ahead of time, such as the FEI 2027 list, apply automatically to shows on or after their effective date. Every result shows the document version and the date it took effect.

Can my vet see it?

Yes. Add your vet as a team member with health access. They see the same results and saved checks: every dose, the published rows used with their page and quote, and the margin recorded under their name.

Does it work for racehorses?

Yes. Pick HISA for US Thoroughbreds. RMTC withdrawal guidance appears next to the HIWU detection time, labelled as advisory. Pick ARCI for state-regulated Quarter Horse and Standardbred racing, or IFHA for international racing. Your state's own rules can differ from the ARCI model rules, so check with your commission.
